Application Support for Legalmaster

Software Vendor: Computer Software for Professionals, Inc.
Application Name: Legalmaster
Application Version: All Versions

Computer Software for Professionals, Inc. supports many version of the PSQL database engine for their application. Users can run old versions (like Btrieve 6.15), but may find better performance and stability on newer versions, especially on newer operating systems. If you are running a newer Windows Vista or Windows 7 machine, you should have Pervasive PSQL v11 at a minimum, and for Windows 7-10, we recommend going with either Actian PSQL v13 or Actian Zen v14.

QUICK LINKS:
  • New Users or Upgrading Users: The current database version is Actian Zen v14. You can download the 30-Day Evaluation License of Actian Zen v14. For smaller sites (under 5 users), you will want to get the Workgroup Engine. Larger Sites (6+ users) should get the Enterprise Server Engine, for which the trial will work for up to 20 concurrent users. If you have a very large number of users and a small database, you may wish to consider Zen Cloud Server 14 instead, which offers unlimited user access to a set amount of data.
  • Actian PSQL v13 Users: Actian PSQL v13 is a current product, and you are fine staying on this for the meantime. If you are running a version older than v13.31, please download the latest (free) updates for PSQL v13. You can find instructions for the download and installation on our PSQL v13 page.
  • Actian PSQL v12 Users: Actian PSQL v12 is an older product that is no longer supported by Actian. If you are running a version older than v12.11, please download the latest (free) updates for PSQL v12. You can find instructions for the download and installation on our PSQL v12 page.
  • Pervasive PSQL v11 Users: Pervasive PSQL v11 is an older product that is no longer supported by Pervasive Software. If you are running a version older than v11.31, please download the latest (free) updates for PSQL v11. You can find instructions for the download and installation on our PSQL v11 page.
  • Pervasive PSQL v10 Users: Pervasive PSQL v10 is an older product that is no longer supported by Pervasive Software. If you are running a version older than v10.31, please download the latest (free) updates for PSQL v10. You can find instructions for the download and installation on our PSQL v10 page.

Installation of the new engine is easy -- launch the downloaded file, follow the prompts, then reboot, so you can do it yourself or have your tech guy (or gal) handle it for you.

If you have a small site, then the Zen Workgroup Engine (WGE) is for you. While it only supports a maximum of 5 computers (including the server), the WGE is a very cost-effective way to get the benefits of the latest Zen database. Note that the WGE is licensed by the number of computers that will be accessing it at the same time. As such, you can install the PSQL Client on 8 workstations, but remember that only 5 users (or whatever user count you have purchased) will be able to run LegalMaster at the same time. If you need more than 5 concurrent users, then you need to purchase the Enterprise Server Engine instead.

The Zen Enterprise Server Engine is for larger sites with user counts of 6, 10, 20, 35 and more. The Enterprise Server Engine also provides additional performance and security over the WGE, and may be considered even for smaller sites looking to grow in the future. The Enterprise Server Engine requires the use of a Windows 2008R2/2011/2012/2016/2019 or Linux database/file server, though systems with less than 20 users should also run on modern workstation-class operation systems (e.g. Windows 10). If you are going with the Server Engine, you'll also be able to use the Backup Agent (to get easier backups), AuditMaster (for independent database auditing), and DataExchange (for replication). Note that the Backup Agent license is free ONLY with Zen Server engines.

Important Note for Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000 Users: Actian PSQL v13 and Actian Zen v14 both require Windows 7 or above, PSQL v12 requires Windows Vista or above, and PSQL v11 requires Windows XP/2003 or above to run properly. PSQLv10 requires Windows 2000 or above. If you have any old computers running older operating systems, you should upgrade these workstations before attempting to switch to PSQLv10 or newer. Windows 7 is supported with v10.30 or above only.

There are several points of interest:

  1. Host Versus Remote Licensing: Legalmaster's "Remote" module is a limited function add-on that provides access to the same data files as does the "Host" software, but with mostly read-only rights. It is typically used by firms that want their attorneys to enter their own time. While all of our clients have the Host, only about half have Remote. If you currently use Legalmaster's Remote Transaction Data Entry module, your PSQL license must accommodate at least the sum of your number of Legalmaster Host and Remote users. The only exception to this rule occurs if a workstation runs both the Host and Remote, in which case that station would need only one license.
  2. Performance Tip: After your system has been running on PSQL for a few weeks, and you are comfortable enough that you will never go back to the old version, you may want to rebuild your data files to take advantage of even more performance gains. See our white paper on this topic for more information.
  3. Status 116 *OR* Status 20 Problem: We have seen some sites with Status 116 or Status 20 errors after installing. If you see these errors, you may have an old DLL still stuck on your system. Search the local and network hard disks to locate a files in the following list: WBTRCALL.DLL, WBTRVRES.DLL, WBTRLOCL.DLL, WBTR32.EXE, WBTRV32.DLL, W32BTICM.DLL, WBTRTHNK.DLL, W32MKDE.EXE, W32MKRC.DLL, dated 1999 or older. If you find such a file, rename or delete it. Do NOT delete any copies in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Pervasive Software\PSQL folder.
  4. Status 46: A Status 46 error message has been seen on a few sites that upgraded to PSQL v9 or newer but were still running some database files in the archaic Btrieve 5.x file format. You will need to rebuild your files to address this. See our white paper on this topic for more information. Note that a Status 46 can also appear if you have multiple versions of the database (some users on PSQLv11, some on Btrieve 6.x), or if you have an anti-virus application scanning your data files.
  5. Client Cache Engine: The PSQL Client Cache Engine can be used to sometimes improve performance over some networks. However, the LegalMaster application is not completely compatible with this technology. As such, we recommend disabling the CCE on your server and workstations. On the server, find the configuration setting called "Allow Cache Engine Connections" and make sure it is disabled. On the workstations, find the setting for "Use Cache Engine" and make sure it is disabled. This will prevent additional memory from being used on your workstations and server.
  6. Btrieve Error 0: Technically, Error 0 means that nothing is wrong. However, we have seen cases where LegalMaster returns this error when the PSQL Client is not properly installed. First, check to make sure that you have installed the 32-bit Client. If you have installed only the 64-bit Client, then LegalMaster will not see it, because LegalMaster is a 32-bit application. If this still doesn't work, look for any old copies of Btrieve DLL's, like WBTRV32.DLL, W32BTICM.DLL, W32MKDE.EXE, etc. and remove or rename these older files.
  7. Btrieve Status 3012: When you get a Status 3012 when attempting to access data on a network, you probably have a pathing issue. According to the LegalMaster developers, when running with a Client/Server database engine, both the database AND the application must be run from the network. Change your shortcut to point to the proper location on the server (and add the Start-In path, if needed), and all should work.
  8. Btrieve Status 11: We have found a few sites getting Status 11 after moving to a new server. If this sounds like you, check for the existence of the file ~PVSW~.LOC in the database folder (the Gateway Locator File) and delete it. If you need a fixed gateway, follow the instructions to set this up again.
  9. DBI Error_Unknown Message: Some LegalMaster sites have reported problems with registry access on some computers which do not use LegalMaster for some period of time. The issue usually occurs after a Windows patch download, and the LegalMaster application is no longer able to see its own registry settings. The solution is to delete the two LegalMaster Registry Keys and re-run LMINST. Contact LegalMaster support for additional help with this issue.
  10. Error: Missing Lmcsp.INI and Superb.INI Files: If the INI files for LegalMaster are not available, you can easily recreate them by running LMINST (from the LMWPROG folder). This will recreate the files and give you the chance to set the workstation ID (WSID). If you do not know your WSID value, look for a file in the LMWPROG folder called LMDIR__. Each workstation will have one WSID stored here. In the LMINST application, go to the WSID page and enter in this value in the first WSID field.
